9 Things to do safely in Salem amidst COVID-19
Salem. Most known for its infamous period of hysteria —the Salem witch trials, has become a popular Halloween destination. Hoards of travelers from near and distant states make the annual trip around Halloween to experience the town, learn of its dark history, and experience its seasonal events. Every year, my friends and I take a girls trip to the historical hotspot and leave with a different experience.
While COVID-19 has forced us into a different “norm,” we’ve adjusted to a quarantined lifestyle and are slowly starting to socialize. Traveling and dining in a limited capacity are prime examples of social distancing. Salem took responsible precautions in canceling major Halloween events such as the Haunted Happenings Grand Parade, the Great Salem Pumpkin Walk, and its outdoor food vendors (in previous years one could get funnel cake and even fried Oreos). Yet Salem celebrated this Halloween season in a COVID conscious way.
So was a trip to Salem this Fall season worth it and is it safe? Yes and yes.
Salem is more than just a tourist destination. For travelers and history buffs it is a treasure trove of fun events and culture. Salem also put into place a curfew and occupancy limitations on each store, restaurant, and its attractions.
Check out my list of 9 things to do in Salem for Halloween and this Fall season. (My top 3 picks are the Salem Witch Museum, Wynott Wands shop, and lunch at the Hawthorne Hotel named after Nathaniel Hawthorne, author of “The Scarlett Letter.”)
Recreational & Eductional Attractions
Salem Witch Museum - Take a dive into what actually happened during the witch trials. The museum pays homage to historical figures like Rebecca Nurse with visual props. I was most impressed that the museum emphasizes how those seen as “different” were often used as scapegoats. The museum is an excellent option for children and adults.
Peabody Essex Museum - Pronounced pih-body, the museum located downtown now has a featured exhibit called “The Salem Witch Trials 1692.” The exhibit runs until April 4, 2021 and features original documents from the actual witch trials.
Wynotts Wands shop - Inspired by Harry Potter’s Ollivanders wand shop, the store features physicall wands for purchase. Stop by to checkout their selection. They also carry a luxury line of scented candles from Northern Lights. I recommend it’s most popular scent “Whiskey & Tobacco.” It’s the perfect scent for the Autumn season.
Candlelight Ghost Tour - If your into Salem’s history of ghostly sightings, this tour is a walk through town to both historic sites and sites of some of those sightings. Learn more here.
The home from Hocus Pocus - The Ropes Mansion is located at 318 Essex Street. Built in 1727 it is located in the McIntire Historic District. While tours have come to a halt, visitors may pass by the house to get an in-person look from the outside.
Historical Attractions
Ye Old Pepper Companie - Salem is home to the first candy store in the U.S. Located on Derby Street the store is known for its famous fudges. I also recommend trying any of their Pecan Turtles. White chocolate is my favorite!
House of the 7 Gables - You can actually visit the historical landmark featured in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s book. You can opt for a 30-minute narrated tour or visit the website for a virtual tour option.
Dining
*Please note due to COVID-19 all Salem businesses close doors at 8pm. Reservations are highly recommended.
The Hawthorne Hotel - Named after Nathaniel Hawthorn, the popular hotel offers a interesting selection of Halloween and Fall-themed cocktails. Check out the Sanderson Sisters Spritzer and its famous pumpking martini called Smashin' Pumpkins.
Food To Try: The Baked Brie Dip (melted brie, topped with a mouthwatering cranberry pecan crumble and honey drizzle, served with toasted crostinis) and the New England Clam Chowder. Afterall, you can’t visit New England without trying its famous dish.
Opus. - If your looking for a swanky vibe with good grub and sophisticated drinks visit Opus. It’s the perfect place for date night or a girl’s night out.
I highly recommend researching any travel restrictions when traveling at this time. While I encourage travel as means of acquiring enriching experiences, please travel responsibly. Hand sanitizer and wearing a face mask at all times can greatly aid in reducing the spread of COVID-19.
